    Just moved into a really old house with 6 friends. Every night, I hear something being dragged across the floor of the attic. There is nothing there when I check. One night, it's really loud and my roommate goes to check. The noise stops as he's on his way up, but I feel something move under my bed. I about shit my pants and jump out of bed just as a hand grabs me from under the bed. It was one of my roommates, but the sound in the attic is still unexplained.

    Lots of people died in this house. It used to be a doctor's residence in the 1800's and my friends grandfather just passed awya there.

    my wife has a sewing room with all sorts of stuff that I find girly in it. If I put up, say, a hunting trophy in this room I think she would be irritated. I never really thought about it until now. Are you telling me that she is a man-hater and exhibiting gender-based disdain because of this? Because that doesn't sound like my wife at all.

    You see, I don't see that room as a bold pink flag waving in my face, humiliating me with the man-hating notion of feminine space existing unsubjugated by masculine concerns. I don't see it that way at all because I am not a bully. It really never crossed my mind that it was even a feminine space, because it is our home.

    Regarding your notion of "The Other" in gender studies, my take is that in a relationship, many women's relationships formed in the pattern of expecting her feelings to become their feelings, her gender identity to become their gender identity. She wants sharing and closeness but doesn't want to do the hard work of understanding and accomodating another person who is different. She reacts to every revelation that they are different people with fear and disappointment that their match is somehow less special than she thought it was, and he wants to prove how special their match is and assures her that he actually does like whatever it is as much as she does. He wants to perform, and courts her by sacrificing one of his interests for one of hers, for instance. Many relationships form along these lines, with the man doing the bulk of the "winning over" behavior.

    These sacrifices can be hard to maintain, and any regression on the man's part to his own nature can be interpreted by the woman as a weakening of his filial resolve. The man's role would be that of being strong and gutting himself of his own gender identity in exchange for hers. In such a relationship, the disdained other is everything that the man was before he met her.

    At its root, this type of relationship is the product of misandry. This is men and women accepting that men cannot be masculine and at the same time be good boyfriends, husbands, or fathers. If the couple did accept masculinity as a positive, then it would be allowed to come out of the cave, or the two cardboard boxes under the winter clothes in the corner of the garage.

    holy fkn fuck. another roadkill in the land of "the victim is right and I don't wanna hear the truth". Unbel. how DiManno turned this into a Circus. People kill themselves if they lose their livelihood too. Not necessarily to prove they're guilty.

    /Edit ; IF you wanna vent email to [email protected], Kathy English is the editor. She reprimanded Antonia Zerbisias for a comment on a politician who appeared at the pride parade. Guy said it should not be turned into a political arena, yet he went there to make points in the Palestine-Israel conflict. Antonia constantly brings up great moments in political hypocrisy. She writes for the Star too.

    > baz and quux are types? So foo is of a higher-order type?

    No, foo is a function of type `Bar baz -> Bar quux`. `baz` and `quux` are both types (unspecified I'd guess, so anything goes), and `Bar` would be a type class (a higher order type?)

    > On a subsequent use of 'OpenFileFlags' how does on tell is the type or the constructor is being referred to?

    It's non-ambiguous, you can't have the constructor and the type in the same contexts so by looking at the context (a type specification or a value building) the user (and the compiler) know which is which.

    Wow, so far 3 comments all suggesting correlation = causation theories with no scientific backing. Most experts on the subject attribute the rise to a wider autism spectrum and better diagnosis, some even suggest an over diagnosis based on a follow-up question asked by the investigators: Were the children considered to have ASD now? Nearly 40 percent of the parents and guardians said no...

    >The researchers urged caution in interpreting the change, noting that an increase in diagnoses does not necessarily mean that more children have the disorder. It could simply reflect a heightened awareness of the disorder.

    Not supernatural in any way but I still get shivers just thinking about it!

    I was on holiday in Malta and spent most days lazing about on the beach, snorkelling, lazing etc.

    The water is crystal clear there and I would spend hours paddling along on the surface, face down, watching the fish. It was lovely.

    One day, I ventured a bit further out. The island dropped off steeply and all I could see was the blackness of the sea. Turn around and it was clear and fairly shallow again.

    Anyway, I was near this wall of blackness, looking down at the pretty fish when all of a sudden, *every single* fish below me did an about-turn and high tailed it back towards the island. I'm left alone and shitting myself thinking "What do they know that I don't?".

    Needless to say I followed the fish as quickly as my flippers would allow, made it back to land and normality.

    I was a bit freaked but thought no more about it, until.... About 6 months later, I was watching a documentary about great white sharks and Malta, it turns out, is a frigging breeding ground for the muthas.

    *That's* when I really shit myself.

    yeah it did get less horrifying each time it happened. So much so that eventually as I said, I was able to leave my body and float around. Once I obtained this, and had the premonition thing happen. (Which I think is just coincidence) I decided to research what was going on. I found out it's called Sleep Paralysis. Then I read ways to treat it. Once I knew how to prevent the paralysis, I could no longer fall asleep in the positions required for me to have the paralysis. Since I would be too anxious, knowing what would happen.

    I was talking about the lack of street mapping data. There is only a huge satellite bitmap. No roads. My city (the capital) has 2 million inhabitants and only 3 streets are mapped.

    There are complete GPL (open source) maps of Romania available. They even have a google maps layer but it is not as good as the regular google maps.

    On the other hand Yahoo and Microsoft both have the Romanian streets. They don't have business data yet or street view.

    If it were so expensive to do street view, how come a small startup in Romania has already done it and it works at least as good as Google's version? It seems to me Google is being stubborn.

    It's not expensive to merge open source data or have a car do Romania in a few months. Years come and pass and the street data is still missing. It feels like shit not to be able to use our iPhones with Maps.app, list businesses, etc.

    Google has been asked, pleaded to, yelled at, petitioned by 12,000 Romanians on Facebook, and still no move. No information. No reply.

    So when I saw Apple play stupid a few days ago with the 3.1 iPhone update I saw a trend. They are doing too good for their own good, if I can say that in English. They forgot how it was when they were the underdogs. Now they have the same despising attitude as any other monopolist. I hope someone else will challenge them just as they have challenged MS, just to give them a little motivation.

    I do enjoy the Vedas, but it's hard trying to connect some of the very archaic parts of the Vedas with some of the relatively modern aspects of the Baghavad Gita. It was the Vedas that got me interested as a child, and I believe that, spiritually and mystically, it served my needs better than the Gita. However, I found it to be philosophically lacking for me. I think that was the thing that I loved most about Hinduism; everyone have a different Veda to Gita ratio, and because of that, you end up with very unique religions. It's a shame, though, that as generations are progressing, they are losing the Vedas.

    I do agree on the chanting, though. I used to go to various Hindu and Vedic camps and made it a point to learn how to chant properly. Though I lost my religious parts, I do find a good deal of clarity and serenity while chanting. I would recommend giving it a try if you have not.

    Rights for the unborn are important indeed, but have to we weighted against the rights of the mother as well. We have laws for killing a fetus already, and hardly any place will perform later term abortions without a serious threat to the mother's life. I honestly think the scenario we have is about as ideal as we'll get, since women will continue to have unwanted pregnancy no matter what. The real problem I have with Catholics is that they condemn contraceptives *and* abortion, which leaves no options.

    Let's do a quick recap of what might take for a very simple corporate web site:

    * Requirements gathering and specifications: 10 hours

    * Development: 40 hours

    * Testing(optimistic): 20 hours

    * Deployment: 5 hours

    So you've 75 hours right there. At $50 the hour that's $3750, and that's just for a minimal web site, not counting design or any feature that goes beyond the bare minimum. If the customer were a corporation with IT security guidelines you're looking into 10 more hours to understand it, integrate it, and get it signed off. If you want a customer-facing web site you need at least three times more testing, lest a tiny little bug allow a remote attacker to exploit a system.

    Small costs add up, and tomes usually need to be expressed pessimistically. I'm a non-broke student that does this for a living btw.

    "What's a film about, what's it really about? What genre does it take?"

    "What, like the spine? Like one sentence?"

    "No, I don't, fucking boy meets girl, I don't give a shit about that. Fuck boy meets girl, fuck motorcycle movie. No, what is really being said? What's really being said, that's what you're talking about. 'Cause the whole idea, man, is subversion. You want subversion on a massive level. You know what one of the greatest fucking scripts ever written in the history of Hollywood is? Top Gun."

    "Oh, come on."

    "Top Gun is fucking great. What is Top Gun? You think it's a story about a bunch of fighter pilots."

    "It's about a bunch of guys waving their dicks around."

    "It - it is a story about a man's struggle with his own homosexuality. It is! That is what Top Gun is about, man. You've got Maverick, all right? He's on the edge, man. He's right on the fucking line, all right? And you've got Iceman, and all his crew. They're *gay*, they represent the gay man, all right? And they're saying, go, go the gay way, go the gay way. He could go both ways."

    "What about Kelly McGillis?"

    "Kelly McGillis, she's heterosexuality. She's saying: no, no, no, no, no, no, go the normal way, play by the rules, go the normal way. They're saying no, go the gay way, be the gay way, go for the gay way, all right? That is what's going on throughout that whole movie... He goes to her house, all right? It looks like they're going to have sex, you know, they're just kind of sitting back, he's takin' a shower and everything. *They don't have sex*. He gets on the motorcycle, drives away. She's like, "What the fuck, what the fuck is going on here?" Next scene, next scene you see her, she's in the elevator, she is dressed like a guy. She's got the cap on, she's got the aviator glasses, she's wearing the same jacket that the Iceman wears. She is, okay, this is how I gotta get this guy, this guy's going towards the gay way, I gotta bring him back, I gotta bring him back from the gay way, so I'm do that through subterfuge, I'm gonna dress like a man. All right? That is how she approaches it."

    .....

    "All right, but the REAL ending of the movie is when they fight the MIGs at the end, all right? Because he has passed over into the gay way. They are this gay, fighting, fucking force, all right? And they're beating the Russians, the gays are beating the Russians. And it's over, and they fucking land, and Iceman's been trying to get Maverick the entire time, and finally, he's got him, all right? And what is the last fucking line that they have together? They're all hugging and kissing and happy with each other, and Ice comes up to Maverick, and he says, 'Man, you can ride my tail, anytime!' And what does Maverick say?

    "'You can ride mine!' Swordfight! Swordfight! Fuckin' A, man!"

    When I was about 17 I worked for a local delicatessen as their Saturday janitor. This involved a broad variety of fairly unpleasant tasks, including:

    * bcleaning out the big chiller cabinets

    * completely emptying, cleaning and refilling the crappy old walk-in freezer (usually half-full of semi-frozen, nasty meat)

    * cleaning the meat slicers

    * clearing the gutters

    * scraping and scrubbing the caked-on grunge from the tiled floors after a busy Saturday sales session

    * cleaning, as well as possible, the utterly disgraceful staff toilets

    Probably the worst of my duties, though, was something much smaller than all these. I was tasked with cutting the flies' eggs from the surface of the hams in the back cooler (the one that didn't really work all that well and had cracks in the glass where the flies could get in).

    Vile.

    All horror movies to me are funny. I guess it's just that I'm used to the usual set-up to the scary parts, they have become so obvious.

    I remember one time when I really freaked out at a scene from a horror movie was when these two characters (Frank and Ernie?) in Return of the Living Dead realize that they were becoming zombies. Their hearts had stopped beating, rigor mortis was setting in and their minds were slowly going. I thought that their performance of what they were going through was horrifying.

    The rest of the movie sucked. It was intentionally more funny than scary anyway, so that scene stood out from the rest.

    Last movie that scared me was OldBoy.

    You can try to make light of it but the fact is that he made his comments and jokes about Clinton, Kerry, Duchovny, Craig, Spitzer, etc.

    He had made clear remarks that what they have done is deplorable.

    He really has no right since he was pulling the same crap.

    He never made fun of them because of their fame, he made fun of them because of their affairs.

    And he ONLY made fun of himself because he got busted. Had he not he would have continued being a sleaze ball hypocrite.

    Of course he pretty much ended being amusing when he left NBC.
